Swordmage: Blades of the Moonsea Book 1
By Westley Giles
This was the first Richard Baker novel I have ever read, and I must say I found it enjoyable. First, the character is what I like. I prefer versatile characters, and Geran Hulmaster is exactly that. Wreckless, yet brave. Effective in his niche profession, and a capable leader who finds himself paired with friends and greatly effectve comrades that become friends as the story unfolds.

Has anything happened that I didn't expect? No. Yet, I still enjoyed this book. The plot was plain english and not overly elaborate. The setting was always interesting and propelled the story forward at a good pace. The characters of importance were likable, and the villains were the exact opposite, which is how I like it. The setting is very fantasy, yet is described well and reminds me of the way Old New York is described with old warfs and cobblestone streets. A great setting overall. The main character is in his element and it shows. He never appears to be in extreme danger during the story, but the story is still compelling enough to warrant a read and a following of the story to its end.

I've read the whole series(3 Books), and I recommend reading the whole series and then make a decision on the series before writing just about one book.

Enjoyable suspenseful writing that celebrates Forgotten Realms yet avoids clich of DND products
By Dechen Thurman
I like this book a lot. The writer uses a lot of devices like shifting in time, multiple perspectives of antagonist as well as protagonists and raising the stakes and twisting the plot. A homecoming for a wounded hero who discovers his absence is negatively consequential. There is a sense of history to a region of Faerun that informs the story. Mystery and politics and romance and action well balanced. I wanted to read the sequel right away, and did.

Well that escalated quickly!

Our past always calls to us, The main character Geran Hulmaster is a son returning home after many years abroad, he has gained many things over the course of his journeys but his thoughts are ever on his banishment from the Elven city of Myth Drannor for his role in a duel with an elven wizard over the love of an elven maiden. He is not the same man he was and when word reaches him of the death of an old friend from his home city he returns to pay his respects. What starts out as an investigation escalates quickly and he and his comrade Hamil are racing through the moors of Thar, exploring dungeons, dealing with a number of threats including a lich, trying to thwart the destruction of the city, and an ending that promises far more to come. The story hits all the hallmarks of a great D&D adventure!

The characters are not one dimensional in any way, Geran is tormented by his past but refuses to give into despair. He is trying to rediscover his place in the world and how to deal with those that he left behind in Hulburg. Miyra was a former love of Geran but moved on after he left, her brother was Geran's best friend and his death brought Geran back to Hulburg. She is not sure how to deal with his return. Hamil is a halfling and a comrade of Geran provides a great amount of laughs from his interactions with the different characters, but he is not comedy relief is just as deadly as Geran. Sarth Khul Rizar, is s tiefling sorcerer that while not wanting to get involved with anything other then his own research is caught up in the events of the story. Then there is Sergen Hulmaster, not related to the family by blood and possessing a huge chip on his shoulder. He strives to elevate himself and is willing to go to incredible risks to do so. There are other villains and heroes that flesh out the story.

The setting of the story ranges from the slowly recovering city of Hulburg and through the menacing countryside. Baker does and excellent job describing the city that is built upon the bones of ruins. The regions of the city are described with just enough detail to make things easily to visualize but still allow for the reader to have their own mental image of the city. The moors of Thar are a treacherous place and are wonderfully described, the casual conversation between Geran and Hamil make it clear they do not want to spend a night on the moors.

The Blades of The Moonsea Trilogy was meant to introduce readers to the new Forgotten Realms and while I was not a fan of the Fourth Edition of D&D, I have read this novel several times over the past few years and I still enjoy it. Several of the changes that took place during the century break between editions are mentioned, and one of the new player races, the tiefling, is introduced but they are not the driving force of the story. To pass this novel up just because you did not like the 4th edition of D&D is a poor decision. To say more would be to give to much away but if you are a looking for a story of the heroes desperately scrambling to thwart a threat then this is for you!
