Beware the "Chupa-Chupa"
By Johns
This is a somewhat repetitive book, but the author, former National Enquirer journalist Bob Pratt, evidently had a real passion and enthusiasm for his subject and consequently it is highly readable. Pratt made several trips to Brazil and evidently was determined to find out as much as possible. At one point some local women lead him through a swamp to the site of one encounter. Pratt had to take his shoes off and says that he wanted to cry, as he wasn't sure whether there were piranhas in the water and the women were laughing at him.

As to the nature of the UFOs, Pratt states, "It seems obvious that we're dealing with nuts-and-bolts craft that have been around a long time and are still here." In view of that statement, I was more than a little surprised to see that the book has an enthusiastic introduction by an author who links aliens with fairies and demons, Jacques Valle, who states that the book "is unique in describing the experience of decades of very difficult field work by a skilled investigator who is equipped with excellent knowledge of the phenomenon ..."

Many of the encounters described in the book occurred in areas where there was no electricity. When electricity was connected to the areas, then the number of UFO sightings dropped markedly.

Sample cases: man had hot liquid dropped on him while he clung to a tree while trying to avoid being sucked up into a UFO; someone carried ten metres by a UFO felt terrible for nearly a year afterwards and would not go out at night for three years; following an apparent three day abduction a man was catatonic for a week and his hair had been burned off, but without burning his scalp; following a four hour abduction a man could barely move for a year and never worked again; a man who was with his horse when he encountered a UFO continued to experience the sound of something like a motor in his head and his horse became so weak that its ribs broke when it was ridden and it had to be sold as horse meat; six months after an encounter a man lost all his mental faculties, and the only words he would say were "mama", "danger" and "give".

The book concludes with some details of the reported capture of two live aliens by the Brazilian military in January 1996.

Dangerous close encounters - UFOs in Brazil
By Dr Peter A. McCue
This is an important contribution to the literature on UFO close encounter cases. The late Bob Pratt undertook extensive fieldwork in Brazil between 1978 and 1996, interviewing numerous witnesses and gathering information from other researchers.

The reported encounters often resulted in illness or injury, although the victims usually recovered. However, in some instances, such as that of a man called Luis Fernandes Barroso, the effects appeared to be long-lasting and severe (pp. 153-156). Several hours before dawn on 23rd April 1976, Barroso hitched a donkey to a two-wheel carriage and set out from his home in Quixada to a farm he owned 10 miles east of the town. Around 7 a.m., he and the donkey were found in a dazed condition at the side of the road, three miles from the farm. According to what Barroso subsequently told his wife, two hours before daybreak, a large lighted object had descended from the sky and hovered over him and the donkey. A door had opened on the bottom of the UFO, and a beam of hot light had struck them, after which Barroso passed out. He spent the next 17 years as a “helpless invalid” before dying of pneumonia.

In some of the Brazilian cases discussed by Pratt, the UFO encounters appeared to have fatal outcomes.

Pratt’s research clearly illustrates that there’s a physical component in many UFO events, that close encounters can be dangerous, and that some form of intelligence is involved. He provides helpful information on how to pronounce many of the personal and place names he mentions. But his book contains no maps, which is unfortunate, since readers might be unfamiliar with many of the places he mentions.

UFO Danger Zone
By Larry S.
UFO Danger Zone is seriously and intelligently written by an author with decades of experience as an investigator. The author made many trips to Brazil to personally investigate reports of encounters. The UFO phenomenon in Brazil is hugely different from reported encounters in other countries, and reading this book expands one's understanding of the variety of the phenomenon.
