Some of the puzzles that have traditionally been on philosophers' agendas have to do with intellectual devices developed to handle less extreme forms of specialization. Two of these, necessity and the practical `ought', are given extended treatment in Elijah Millgram's The Great Endarkenment. In this collection of essays, both previously published and new, Millgram pays special attention to ways a focus on cognitive function reframes familiar debates in metaethics and metaphysics. Consequences of hyperspecialization for the theory of practical rationality, for our conception of agency, and for ethics are laid out and discussed. An Afterword considers whether and how philosophers can contribute to solving the very pressing problems created by contemporary division of labor.

Con depresi�n o sin depresi�n, lea este libro

La premisa fundamental de este libro es sencilla: uno se siente como piensa. Aunque este es un adagio prestado de la filosof�a estoica, el autor (y otros psic�logos de la escuela cognitiva) le han dado un giro cient�fico para desarrollar una de las mejores terapias para aquellos que sufrimos de depresi�n en diversos niveles. El libro original est� escrito en un ingl�s sencillo, accesible para la mayor�a de los lectores. Claro est� que las traducciones adolecen de una tendencia a mezclar la formas de la lengua original con aquellas a las que se intenta traducir. Ya la traducci�n del t�tulo muestra ese raquitismo. El t�tulo no podr�a ser m�s desafortunado, aunque, claro est�, el traductor est� tratando de ser literal.
Es mi esperanza que la traducci�n no haya dejado de lado el mensaje general del libro. Pero aun as�, estoy seguro que el lector encontrar� descripciones de las falacias mentales que nos hunden en la depresi�n, formas de tratar poner en jaque nuestra misma mentalidad depresiva y tareas pr�cticas que ayudan a enfrentar la depresi�n de una manera positiva.
Este no es un libro de superaci�n personal cualquiera. A diferencia de las charlataner�as que populan hoy el mercado, este es un libro s�lido y bien escrito. L�alo; se va a sentir mejor.

Great self-help book for those who want to feel less blue

At first the techniques taught in the book may not make much sense. But therein lies the key. You have to keep at it because eventually they will make sens and you'll be transforming yourself. The self-esteem gains are well worth the effort. I read this book for the first time about 10 years ago, and I still keep it handy to help deal with any kind of life situation (relationship, work, etc...).

About the Author

Pranee�Liamputtong�is a medical anthropologist and holds a Personal Chair in Public Health at the School of Public Health, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia.�Pranee has her interests in issues regarding childbearing, childrearing, and women’s reproductive and sexual health. She has conducted research with migrant and refugee women in Australia and with women in Southeast Asia.� She has published several books and a large number of papers in these areas. Her recent books in the health and social science areas include: The Journey of Becoming a Mother Amongst Women in Northern Thailand (Lexington Books, 2007); Community , Health and Population (with�Sansnee Jirojwong, Oxford University Press, 2008); Infant Feeding Practices : A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Springer 2011); Motherhood and Postnatal Depression : Narratives of Women and Their Partners (with Carolyn Westall, Springer, 2011); and Health , Illness and Well -Being : Perspectives and Social Determinants (with Rebecca�Fanany and Glenda Verrinder, Oxford University Press, 2012). She has recently edited two books on HIV/AIDS for Springer including Women, Motherhood and HIV /AIDS: A Cross -Cultural Perspective and Stigma, Discrimination and HIV /AIDS: A Cross-Cultural Perspective.
