While wisely rated G for Gross ("Contains immature material not suitable for adults"), Andy Griffiths' very funny debut novel will almost certainly blow away--perhaps literally, stinkingly--anyone of any age who's ever suspected that their backside might be up to something.

Translated from the Australian (sold Down Under as "The Day My Bum Went Psycho"), this adventure begins with the nighttime flight of our 12-year-old protagonist Zach's pale little heinie and doesn't let up for over 200 pages--most of which are filled almost exclusively with the word "butt." At first, Zach believes his butt might be leading some sort of minor butt rebellion, but the plot quickly thickens to include a global army of feral butts, the "greatest buttcano in the history of the world," and a head-butt "rearrangement" conspiracy that goes all the way to the... um, bottom. Our well-meaning but naive hero Zach soon gets mixed up with the butt-fighting "B-team" (the Kicker, the Kisser, and the Smacker, who all "love the smell of freshly smacked butt in the morning!"), fires his very first 4502-LL ("The LL stood for Laxative Launcher"), learns how to "butt-hop" ("The average butt has enough gas to propel itself and a rider for twenty minutes...."), and goes on a long, wild chase involving cluster butts, buttcatchers, kamikaze butts, stinkants, and even the fearsome Stenchgantor, "the Great Unwiped Butt." (And that's not even counting all those seagoing butt piranhas and poopoises.)

Griffiths surely likes the cheap laughs and doesn't miss a single opportunity for buttly wordplay (from "high-frequency emissions" to the smell-ranking "Rectum scale"), but that doesn't make The Day My Butt Went Psycho any less clever--the fast-moving plot has as many double-crosses as double entendres, and Griffiths weaves in some pretty brilliant ideas. Who knew you could have a death throe scene between a butt and its owner? Also includes a snarky butt glossary in the book's... uh, rear. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Griffith's fun gross-out adventure novel follows Zack Freeman, who awakens to see his rear end leaping out the window to lead a bum rally. Zack's butt urges bums to "assume our rightful positions on top of the neck." Zack searches for the "one person who can stop [the plan]," the Bum Hunter, and in the process meets up with legendary bum fighters like the Kisser and the Smacker-plus the Bum Hunter's tough daughter, Eleanor. As the team tries to stop the bums from erupting a disgusting bumcano (hint: it's not filled with lava), they encounter a stink tornado, swimming poopoises, the Stenchgantor, "also known as the Great Unwiped Butt"-and a traitor in their midst. Though Zack finally tells his bum, "Well, maybe if I'd taken better care of you... you might not have gone psycho in the first place," kids will gleefully discover there's no great lesson learned here. Some of Griffith's details are hilarious (a fluffy pink toilet seat cover is the perfect tool for trapping bums, who "are powerless to resist them"), others plain disgusting (Zack and Eleanor hitch a ride on an exploding bum pimple), but young readers will likely get a kick out of it all (there's even a glossary included). Love It or Hate It, This Book Is About Butts.

It's interesting to look through the reader reviews for this book; I don't know that I've ever seen a book veer as wildly between 1 and 5 star reviews. The lower ratings often express dismay and outrage at the book's subject matter, which, given its title, may strike one as a bit silly.

"This book is about butts? What trash!"

Not only is this Australian book about butts (the title originally used "bum"), but the word "butt" is in virtually every sentence. If you or yours enjoy scatological Aussie humor, you'll love this. As a middle school teacher, I've seen this book in so many hands, I felt obligated to read it. I may have regretted my decision when the book's main character and his pal ride an exploding butt pimple, but I stuck in there.

So to summarize: The Day My Butt Went Psycho is funny, and it's about butts. Be warned.

All I can say is my 8y.o. son loves it...

My 8 y.o. son is not a big reader and trying to find books he actually wants to read is hard. Like a lot of boys his age he is (unfortunately) obsessed w/potty humor. I saw this book and knew he'd like it. Understatement. He can't wait to read it b/f bed and I've found him reading it on his own during the day. It's full of butt-humor that boys his age find hysterical. Went ahead and ordered the others in the series as well. One good thing seems to be that reading about it seems to have cut down on his need to potty talk all the time. Being a good reader is instrumental in their future academic success so I get him whatever will hold his interest. He finds the Frannie K. Stein books entertaining as well.

Not Funny to my 8yo son.

The title of this book was so exciting to my 8yo. He started reading it as soon as we received it. He quickly became bored of it. He tried picking it up three or four more times but couldn't bring himself to read it. He's all about crude humor but just didn't find it funny. He ended up giving it to a friend. For a frame of reference to his humor, he laughed out loud several times to the Judy Blume "Fudge" books.

About the Author
Archpriest Josiah B. Trenham is pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Christian Church in Riverside, California. A former clergyman of the Presbyterian and Reformed Episcopal Churches, in 1993 he was received into the Orthodox Church and ordained to the holy priesthood by Bishop Basil of Wichita and Mid-America. In 2004 he received his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Durham, England, where he studied under the renowned Orthodox Christian professor of Patristics Fr. Andrew Louth. Since 2004, Fr. Josiah has served as Adjunct Professor of History at California Baptist University in Riverside. He participates in yearly academic forums and symposia, conducts numerous parish retreats each year throughout the United States and Canada, and is the founder of Patristic Nectar Publications. He and his presbytera, Catherine, were married in 1988, and from their happy union have been born nine children.

not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be

First of all, the form: even though it is a Ph.D. dissertation, it makes for quite engaging reading, not a bit dull or dry as I feared it might be. It is, however, very concise and somewhat dense in places, and the footnotes occasionally occupy more space on the page than the main text. This is not light reading. If that's your cup of tea, you will enjoy this book.

Second, the content: this book is bound to offend anyone with modern views on sexuality. Given how fast and drastically modern values have changed in this area, this can only be a good thing. Some reviewers have denounced it as presenting extreme and unbalanced views, not representative of Orthodox teaching. Certainly it is true that many (most?) Orthodox today would be greatly surprised to find out what the Church has always taught, because it is hardly ever taught now. It is not the author, however, and still less St. John Chrysostom, who are extreme. It is rather our own times and social values which are extreme and unbalanced, having departed quite far from the teaching of the Church, and this book offers a welcome corrective.

Far from being "arrogant" and "dismissive", as one reviewer slanderously asserts, Fr. Josiah engages other scholars thoughtfully and honestly. Nor is it true, as another reviewer wrote, that virginity is valued at the expense of marriage. Rather, St. John Chrysostom taught, and Fr. Josiah repeatedly emphasized, that both marriage and virginity are blessed, but that the latter path is the ideal for those who are able. This is the teaching of St. Paul and of Christ himself, as anyone who has read the New Testament can verify.

This book is Fr. Josiah Trenham's thesis submitted for his degree in philosophy at the University of Durham, England. Saint John Chrysostom gets right down to the nitty-gritty details and shows us he was quite sensitive to the difficulties and joys of marriage.

Although this book is entitled, "Marriage & Virginity according to Saint John Chrysostom", this work also includes an corresponding overview of Tertullian, St. Clement of Alexandria, Origen, St. Methodios of Olympus, St. Athanasios the Great and St. Ephrem the Syrian. Through this patristic synthesis Father Josiah presents us with a coherent Christian view of marriage and consecrated virginity.

I lent this book to a friend of mine that was having difficulties in his marriage. Although he had been through normal pre-marriage counselling he said it was surprising the things he didn't know. My opinion is that it should be included in any pre-marriage counselling; there is a lot here will be surprising and useful whether you are married or not.

Stellar Study on Sexual Issues, Through the Fathers

I suspect this topic/title would strike most -- even Christians, even many Orthodox Christians -- as perhaps dry or dull, but it's the furthest thing from, provided you have even a slight interest in the subject matter. The patristic understanding of these and related issues (sex, contraception, eschatology etc.) would strike the vast majority of modern Christians as peculiar and idiosyncratic, if not crazy, but it's the genuine teaching of the Orthodox Church even to this day. On its face, marriage and virginity seems like a narrow area of study, but from the Orthodox/patristic view, these are the only two authentic modes of Christian life itself, so it's actually an expansive topic. Father Josiah brilliantly examines this through the teachings of St. John Chrysostom, as he is the Church Father whose extant corpus has the most breadth and depth, thereby touching on many topics from many angles, and because his thought is reflective of the patristic period and in concert with other Fathers. A welcome and direly needed antidote to the ever-expanding feminized and/or liberalized Christianity that abounds

Grade 7 Up–Scott Hudson begins his freshman year of high school as a source of income to Wesley, the school shakedown artist. The girl he's known since kindergarten has blossomed into a goddess, but doesn't seem to know he's alive. He gets roped into writing the sports column for the school newspaper, even though he's not an athlete. On top of everything else, his mom is pregnant. As Scott maneuvers through a number of serious situations—bullying, a suicidal classmate, school dances—he still manages to be upbeat and true to himself. Overloaded with extracurricular activities and honors homework, he begins a journal filled with lists and tips for his expected sibling on how to survive freshman year. As the school year and his mom's pregnancy progress, Scott begins to find his niche at school in David Lubar's laugh-out-loud novel (Dutton, 2005). The main narration is more than capably done by Ryan MacConnell as Scott. The rest of the characters are voiced by a variety of actors, adding depth to Scott's experiences. Unobtrusive music throughout enhances the recording, including a lullaby whenever Scott writes in his journal for the baby. Along the way, he discovers that his mother is pregnant, and he writes a series of insightful letters to his soon-to-be sibling. By the end, Scott has outgrown his freshman insecurities, realizing that he has carved a place for himself in the high-school world. The story delivers too many messages as Scott learns one important lesson after another. Still, most readers will find plenty of amusing, accurate observations about freshman life, from the insecurities of first dates to the dangers of walking the hall between classes. Todd Morning

Funny & Relatable according to my freshman son

My son had to read this for English I in high school. He's a freshman and said he totally related to the book. Very funny and he relatable. My 15 year old son enjoyed the book so much he asked me to buy the second book. He likes to read but very rarely does he enjoy books that he "has" to read for school. I'd say that's a plus!!

I read this book because it is on my son's summer reading list. The main character is an intelligent and witty boy with a love of books. While writing a survival guide for his unborn sibling, he cleverly incorporates his English lessons to tell the story of his freshman year. The book addresses bullies, homework, a suicide attempt, friends going in different directions, and making new friends. Overall, it was very good and enjoyable to read.

I bought this book for my nephew as it was required summer reading. Now this is a child that would rather do ANYTHING other than read. He finished this entire book in less than 24 hours. He LOVED it. I actually had to pry it out of his hands so he would go to sleep.

This is a book for anyone! This is a book written by someone who has devoted a great deal of thought to what it is he does when he works out a poem, and it is formed by his practice as both a writer and a medical doctor. This is the best poetry book I've ever read; at least the only one that has made me laugh out loud!!!

Such a great cute book! We read it to our daughter every night and she's only 4 months old. I love how it incorporates little fun life lessons into the stories. With so many selections, I can go a week without having to rummage through her books to find another one! Loved it so much I bought them as gifts for my niece and nephews.
