Clear and comprehensible text on relativity and quantum mechanics

We use it as a textbook for an introductory level philosophy class (philosophy of space and time), and I think this is a really good choice for that purpose. Narration is easy to follow and the connection between sections is solid not only in terms of chronology but also pedagogically. Beside being a textbook, I also recommend it as daily reading.

About the Author
Richard J. Haier earned his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University and is Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Irvine. He pioneered the use of neuroimaging to study intelligence in 1988 and has given invited lectures at meetings sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the European Molecular Biology Organization, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In 2016, he served as President of the International Society for Intelligence Research and became Editor-in-Chief of Intelligence.

Brilliant, informative, and in a smooth writing style.

This is an excellent book, with up to date information about the latest forms of brain imaging and other research into human cognition. Haier is the leader in the rapidly developing field of intelligence research based on brain imaging. This book is written in a style that makes the reading easy, but without sacrificing its technical merits. I think it is the best book relating to intelligence research since Jensen's The g Factor.

This book covers such controversial ground in a way that is not incendiary. Dr. Haier addresses the issue in a way that makes clear that intelligence's biological basis is not open to dispute, except by those who choose to keep their heads in the sand as, alas, do many activists and social "scientists." The book manages to be fully authoritative, with key assertions documented by solid research (by dozens of top researchers, not just by the author), yet fully accessible to any, ahem, intelligent reader. I consider this up-to-the-minute book a must-read for anyone who wants to think in a clear-eyed way about the basis of individual and group differences, not only in intelligence, but in school and life success.

Introduction to Computing Systems: From bits & gates to C & beyond, now in its second edition, is designed to give students a better understanding of computing early in their college careers in order to give them a stronger foundation for later courses. The book is in two parts: (a) the underlying structure of a computer, and (b) programming in a high level language and programming methodology.

To understand the computer, the authors introduce the LC-3 and provide the LC-3 Simulator to give students hands-on access for testing what they learn. To develop their understanding of programming and programming methodology, they use the C programming language. The book takes a "motivated" bottom-up approach, where the students first get exposed to the big picture and then start at the bottom and build their knowledge bottom-up. Within each smaller unit, the same motivated bottom-up approach is followed. Every step of the way, students learn new things, building on what they already know. The authors feel that this approach encourages deeper understanding and downplays the need for memorizing. Students develop a greater breadth of understanding, since they see how the various parts of the computer fit together.

Then the book shows you the basic components a computer, and then gives a full example in the LC-3. The LC-3 is complete with a architecture diagram and Assembly instructions. The book does a good job of of taking you through the LC-3 data path and showing how an instruction is implemented on the architecture. The book also does a good job of showing how the assembly code connects to higher level languages like C/++ or Java. It also gives a high-level explanation of exactly what a compiler does. Towards the end it gives some information on data structures and particularly as to how a stack would be implemented by the LC-3 in assembly. The book also explains how memory works and how input and output are handled in some computers.

Some problems with the book are in the C section. This book does not give a real C tutorial, there are much better guides to C programming.It doesn't really give you any instruction as to how to program in LC-3 Assembly; however, the instructions are simple enough that you should be able to figure it out. Another potential problem is the combinational logic section. This part of the book is not really comprehensive, but teaches what you need to know so that you understand how all the low-level components work; however, if you want to design your own combinational logic, then there are other books for that. Also this book does not really go into the theory of how and why they developed the LC-3 architecture as it is. It is just an intro to get you used how a computer architecture looks and how it works.

All in all a great read for a CS student or Electrical Engineer to get an idea of how a computer runs the programs written on it.

Note: I am a student at University of Illinois (Patel works here) and took a class created around this book. ECE 190 is still my favorite class I've taken to date.

Gradual and relaxed intro, well done

I had programmed in a number of languages including C before, but I was a bit intimidated by assembler. I was also curious about how microchips work, and why they seem to be all about transistors. There's a lot of material on the web on this subject, but none of it seems detailed and organized enough to really teach you anything. After reading this book, it all makes sense.

There are some great sections including simple, excellent explanations of 2s-complement numbers and finite state machines. I'd recommend this book to anyone who already programs in C, and has played a bit with pointers - I'm not sure I would have liked to encounter them for the first time in this text.

The book is not perfect. Its pace is very slow, and authors often threw in "real-world" analogies which I didn't find helpful. Some sections are a bit repetitive. There were a few concepts thrown in without careful introduction, for example call-by-value vs. call-by-reference. Again, that's not a serious problem if you have even passing familiarity with C.

Overall, a gradual, relaxed, well-structured introduction to a fascinating subject. Good preparation for further study.

This collection of Kent Nelson's stories is moving and thought provoking. With masterful description and emotion each story takes the reader along a winding road to an unfamiliar destination and an outcome that lingers long after the story is through. Mr. Nelson is the Harry Chapin of short stories.

AMAZING!!!

The spirit bird was assigned for my English class and I being one who doesn't like to read was amazed. My favorite story was The Hotel Glitter, I found the story easy to read and to understand. Each story ends in a way that makes you curious as to what is going to happen next looki for a part 2. I recommend this book and I will retread the story because it's just an amazing book overall.

worth the effort

this book is not for the faint-hearted. A lot of work is required from the guitarist in writing in fingering and sometimes deleting impossible hand positions in some pieces. Clearly the arrangements were not focussed on the guitarists ease of performance (but when is Piazzolla's music easy to perform). The parts for the violin do take some extra effort in terms of timing, and ensemble issues do arise when first putting some pieces together. However, if you do work on the pieces you can create some absolutely wonderful and enriching sounds that really do capture the essence of nuevo tango. This book is a must for the violin/guitar ensemble and is a welcome addition to the regular and often boring repertoire for this wonderful combination. Tango for two!

The selection of pieces is quite interesting, most people only know 'Libertango', 'Las Estaciones Porte�as', 'Escualo', 'Historia del Tango' and so, this book is great to get inside different pieces from this amazing composer, the only known piece on the book is probably "Adi�s Nonino". What I didn't like about the book is that it doesn't include separated parts, on the guitar is ok to have the score, but a violin part would be really handy to have on this edition, unfortunately the description didn't' mentioned anything about it.

Great music, quick delivery

This is a great book of music for intermediate to advanced classical guitarists who know a violinist interested in playing duos. The seller was very quick in getting the item to me as soon as I ordered it. Highly recommend.

Ashe Bedevere, rake extraordinaire, has spent ten years traveling, gambling, drinking, seducing women, and avoiding his home and family. Those ten years have seen terrible things happen to the Bedevere estate in his absence. When his father's death demands he return home, he is shocked by what receives him. No longer does his home sing with beauty, but the servants are sparse, and the estate is in debt. The dead Earl was clever though; he knew what his son and home would need and he's decreed his wishes in his will. Genevra (Neva) Ralston is a young and beautiful American widow. She's as shocked as Ashe by the Earl's will, but she is uninterested in being Ashe's newest mistress and has no plans to remarry. Has the rake, capable of seducing any woman, finally met his match?

This was a great read, well written, and well paced. There are a few editing issues, but nothing major enough to disrupt my enjoyment of the book. I liked Neva, I thought she was a perfect foil for Ashe. She has a very modern thinking process though, which at times caused me to pause, I don't know if historical romance readers will be bothered by it or not. I found her a spirited and interesting heroine.

I feel like the book really belongs to Ashe, the hero, rather than Neva. I felt his POV deeper, I think he exhibited more emotional depth than Neva's POV did. I also felt that Ashe was the only character that grew as the story progressed. The antagonists in this were creepy, and well done. I felt having them on the back burner simmering was a good tactic, they were never far from my mind and had settled in ominously.

The romance was great, I really enjoyed Ashe and Neva and was actually sad when this ended, which is always a sign of a good book, I would happily recommend this.

Casanova, English style???

I must admit that I liked Ashe, the rakish hero that makes sex an art form, from the beginning. He's another in a long line of sexy lovers conjured by the talented imagination of Bronwyn Scot. This, the third installment in the Rakes Beyond Redemption, is a well-written story that manages to touch one on all levels, almost as much as he does!

That said, the story captures one's attention in the beginning, when Ashe receives a note of the news of his father's death, while he's in bed with Lady Hargrove-somebody else's wife. He returns to Bedvedere, his childhood home, and finds it in major disrepair. His brother, Alex, is now the earl, but is not in residence and purportedly mentally unstable, and unable to assume the duties of running the estate. Ashe believes he's to take up the reins for his brother, but instead of being the man-in-charge, he finds himself part of a regency. His father having petitioned the Crown for this trusteeship, made up of himself, an American heiress he's never met before, Genevra, and Henry, his hated cousin, has set in motion events that will define Ashe and Genevra's future. The regency's divided into shares and the heiress has the major shares. Who is she and why is she in charge? These are Ashe's first questions, but not his last, as he makes a journey home, and to the man he can be. On the way to that man, he seduces a wife, breaks his brother out of the private hospital, and kicks his cousin to the curb.

I really liked this story, and I felt that it was more or less, Ashe's tale, with Genevra thrown in for spice. The attraction between Ashe and Genevra, at times was hot, and sensuous, but always honest; no subterfuge, or pretense was involved in the fact that they wanted each other, which was refreshing. You'll run the gamut of emotions in this, and I recommend it for a winter's read!

Putting Others Ahead of Self

I loved this story! I had read the first in the series which was a dellightful battle of the sexes. I was concerned at the start of this one that it would not be as enjoyable. It started out slow and sad. However, I liked this one better than the first.
What I love best is the heroine Genevra. She had had a bad marriage that ended with disaster. Instead of feeling sorry for herself or hiding, she moved forward with her life. She even worked toward helping other women to have a sense of purpose and independence.
I also enjoyed the hero Ashe. He was a typical rogue who only worried about himself, his needs, and his pleasures. He is put into a position where he must take care of and think about others. He is put in a forced relationship with Genevra who challenges his preconceived notions of the fairer sex. Watching the pair fall in love was a joy!
