In a series of interviews, interspersed with Mandela's censored letters, his wifebanished in the late '70s to a remote town in the Orange Free Statetells their story. Here are their marriage and early years together, their political work and her life since his final arrest and triala time of harassment, marked by banishment and most recently the destruction by arson of the family's home and the kidnapping of a grandchild. This collection of interviews with Man dela and of excerpts from letters writ ten by her husband, Nelson, traces the life of a leader of the South African peo ple who has often been thought of only in relation to her husband. The inter views deal with much more than the current situation and create a brief autobiography of a remarkable woman. All periods, from childhood in Pondo land to her present life in Brandfort (her ``Little Siberia''), are discussed. For those who already know a great deal about the South African situation this book will illuminate the life of one ex traordinary leader, her determination and her hope in spite of imprisonment and banishment. For others the histori cal sections written by Benson will help to put the personal sections in context, and the book will be a good introduc tion to the nature of apartheid society. The Hero's of Our Struggle

What most people forget - South African as well as most foreigners (where the ongoing story about Nelson Mandela often graced the media) - we back home lived in a "White-Out" world of severe censorship. However - it has always been the women - mothers, wivers, daughters ... family members who were often denied any news about their activist menfolk. Not only this - but many of our women "the silent" numbers of the liberation struggle - who were overlooked for playing their role as steadfast revolutionaries.

The Woman's March in 1956 should have lain bare the undying commitment of the role of our women in The Struggle. Without their undying support - many of the detained, imprisoned menfolk would hardly have survived. And yet - these self-same women were made to bear the brunt of suppression by the fascist Neo-Nazi type oppressors. This is where our Nomzamo 'Winnie' Madikizela Mandela was most visible - for enduring constant arrests, interrogations, bannings and being forcibly removed from her small children. The experienced extreme hardship in the battle of keeping their families intact.

Interesting, Informative, an education.

I learned more about Africa and the struggle of blacks revolting for freedom as the white African people celebrated. I didn't realize civil rights was won over in the 60's in the USA but it was years later for African nations. When I hear or observe black Americans complain not being treated right, I feel everyone needs to stand back, read how suppressed other people are in other countries, and thank God how all of us are in the USA!

About the Author
Bernard Porter,�Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Newcastle, took his degrees at Cambridge University, becoming a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, before moving on to a Lectureship at Hull, a Chair at Newcastle and Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Yale and Sydney. His books include Empire and Superempire (a comparison between British and American ""imperialisms""), The Absent-Minded Imperialists and The Lion's Share. He mainly lives in Sweden.

The latest, but is it the greatest?

I just picked this one up at the book store yesterday, so have not yet finished reading it. Since nobody else has yet reviewed this book, I'll volunteer to go first to make a few first observation comments.

First, this new book is quite factual and chronologically accurate. It is also very well organized, with an uncustomary, but fully detailed ToC. Atypical for such books, it has LOTS of full page photos, and illustrative figures (mostly B&W, but one whole section devoted to color of this Apollo mission). Many of the pictures are unusual in that I have yet to see them published elsewhere in similar books on the same subject. For this reason alone I recommend this new book by David Harland, "The First Men on the Moon: The Story of Apollo 11".

I'm sure it is somewhat repetitive of other books on this and other Apollo Moon Missions, but still appears much more focused on this specific amazing and most historic spaceflight. It is seemingly much more technically detailed with factual information as well. The bibliography listed references is impressive, so the author must have thoroughly researched Apollo 11 in preparing this book.

I have read (and reviewed on this website) several other excellent books on Project Apollo, particularly those written by the Astronauts and key players within Mission Control, plus watched all the currently available (DVD) videos as well. This one may turn out to surpass all other sources of information, including NASA's archives, with respect to the first Moon landing. However, I will have to return to update my review at a future date, after reading it to completion.

So far, the only criticism I have of this and other related space exploration books published by Springer Praxis, is that they are quite expensive, especially in paperback. Nevetheless, my first impression is you get what you pay for, and though paperback, this book just may DELIVER on its lofty price as an authoritative and exhaustive work, infused with much technical (and accurate) information, yet easy to read. Certainly, the wealth of picture content serves a useful purpose in complementing the actual reading material, so that it becomes more meaningful and interesting to the average reader, non-rocket science types, such as myself.

An excellent account of Apollo 11

I worked on the Apollo 11 launch at Kennedy and therefore have a more than passing interest in the subject. This is the first book I have found that is (as far as I can tell) technically perfect. I was sorry when I ran out of book. I especially enjoyed the way Harland included the on-board voice transcripts interspersed with his explanations of what was going on. Lots of good photos and explanatory diagrams. I would rate this 10 stars if it were possible.

Same Story base, new pictures and information

My review is similar, in part, to the first reviewee from California. I had seen this one listed but did not purchase it immediatley. I read and collect books on the Mercury to Apollo space program but I had to weigh the price-to-new-presentation format factor of this book before deciding to aquire it.

The first review was enough to make me want to get it and add it to my collection. Some new pictures, in color, were good to see. (Also noted was the fact that there are pictures of Neil Armstrong on the moon. This seems to be mis-represented in other books. The two pictures are of him in the background and not a "tourist" style shot.)

What I liked the most was the commentary between the astronauts and Mission Control. I had not read as complete of a dialoge from lift off to splash down as I had in this book. This type of material may have been covered in other books that I have not yet discovered or read, such as the NASA Mission Report book series by Robert Goodwin.

I enjoyed the layout and informative interpretation of the material. I thought that it was another good version of an "old" story.

About the Author
John P. Blair is a Professor of Economics at Wright State University where he teaches courses in urban economics and local economic development. He received a Ph. D. from West Virginia University. He has served as a consultant for a variety of state and local governments as well as private agencies. He has written numerous books and articles about urban issues and public policies. Blair’s academic articles have appeared in such journals as Land Economics, Growth and Change, and Economic Development Quarterly.

Michael C. Carroll is the Director of the Center for Regional Development and Associate Professor of Economics at Bowling Green State University. Prior to joining BGSU, he served on the faculty at Muskingum College and West Virginia State University. Dr. Carroll’s business experience includes positions as corporate controller, operations manager, and president. His research interests focus on regional economic development and social economics. He is Editor-in-Chief of Regional Science Policy and Practice and Associate Editor of Economic Development Quarterly. His writings have appeared in a variety of academic journals including, the Journal of Economic Issues, Annals of Regional Science, and the Industrial Geographer. Dr. Carroll also authored A Future of Capitalism: The Economic Vision of Robert Heilbroner (Macmillan and St. Martin’s Press) 1998. He earned his Ph.D. from Colorado State University.
