Mediocre, it could be better

This is a good book. It's clear and concise and really helps students learn. However, I got this book from my local bookstore for a dollar less than what you're advertising it for and I didn't have to pay credit card and/or shipping and handling fees. The book is good, but the price is not.

The authors did an awesome job of teaching the material

Recently I took a college class that used this book as its textbook. The authors did an awesome job of teaching the material. I learned a lot of valuable information which can be applied toward working with young children. However, the text is full of many typos. . The editors did a poor job on this edition. A college level textbook should not have an excessive amount of errors. It should be recalled and revised before any other student pays the high price for this text. I Gave a copy of this letter with a list of the many typos that I noticed to the math department at SPSCC in Olympia, WA suggesting they don't use this book for the students (until it is re-edited). The Book of the Forsaken

I first came across The Book of the Forsaken on a critiquing website and it made a strong impression on me then. That you've been able to convince a reader who knows and cares so little about the fantasy genre that the last (and probably only) fantasy novel I read was Lord of the Rings is a testament to your accomplishment as a writer. Slick and sophisticated, witty and highly imaginative. I look forward to reading the next book from this writer.

A fast-paced supernatural dark comedy

The Book of the Forsaken is written on the intriguing premise that the storyteller himself is a character. That is, the words on the page, the words that you and I, the readers, are seeing, were put there by a narrator who mischievously refuses to identify himself. The brief prologue hints that this narrator is a demi-god of some kind, one with the power to manipulate the destinies of the people he calls his "puppets."

The first three chapters of the book introduce us to these puppets: Robert Cassidy, Daniel Maladie, and Igor Rubinstein. Each has individually discovered that he has a supernatural ability, a fact that binds their destinies. Cassidy, the most entertaining of the three, is a trash-talking Irishman with a penchant for nicknaming people whose names he doesn't know. The more sympathetic Daniel, who at the beginning of the story is a bookstore assistant in Paris, is mocked by the narrator as being a coward and an idiot. But although he is meek and insecure, he nevertheless accepts an assignment to steal an ancient book. And then there's Igor, a somewhat psychopathic Russian magician who moonlights as an assassin.

The bulk of the book appears to be written in third person omniscient, peering into the minds of all three men, but it is actually, on a higher level, a first person narrative. The narrator routinely interrupts the action to insert his own brand of humor through sarcastic commentary, sometimes in the form of footnotes. Karatsioris' experimental style can be confusing in some places and brilliant in others. I must give him kudos for thinking outside the box and daring to try something that challenges conventional ideas about storytelling. He keeps his writing crisp and to-the-point, wasting no words on flowery descriptions or lengthy monologues. The sparseness of the sentences coupled with the vividly imagined fantastical elements makes The Book of the Forsaken an exciting and fast-paced read.

It is a book that you cannot put down until you have finished I would definatly recommend it I am now waiting for book 2 am hoping that the author is working on that

I'm not quite believing this...

I thought to myself, "This might be the most preposterous reason to write a book that I have ever encountered." And then I encountered the chapter on Tab.

The author is CLEARLY a scholar of the fizzy brown stuff, and deserves a good bit more attention than he's likely to get from this book alone. So here's hoping that a sequel is in the works!

Seriously, this is NOTHING to take seriously. A great little fun romp. Highly recommended!

Non-Addicts Need not Apply!

An autobiographical, nostalgic tribute to family, fun, and Coke addiction. Do you remember collecting coke bottles, carelessly tossed away, for the deposit money? I do. This book will take you back to the old days. If you don't know or remember those days, you'll get the idea after the first chapter of the book. Unless you are a Mormon, or a Seventh Day Adventist (all due respect) you're addicted to something...coffee, Coke, wine or sports, Game of Thrones or Homeland. You'll relate to the downright silly, goofball and fully authentic book. Read the book; give it as a gift. It's four hours of your life "you'll never get back", but it sure beats reruns of Gilligan's Island!

Witty, Quirky and Hilarious

A fun, easy to read book. I laughed often at the continuous and ridiculous antics this addict would do to get a Coke, and the pure pleasure experienced when indulging in that “carbonated concoction”. I came across addicts of all sorts while reading this book (coffee, coke, chocolates, and a few unmentionables) and each of them had similar stories about what they had done, or were willing to do, to get the fix of their choice. A great read for any addict or their enabler.

Good story

I don't usually read bios, but being involved in the racing industry, and knowing Garrett Gomez as a rider only, spurred my interest. It was an interesting, although somewhat depressing story and the end has yet to truly be written as Garrett continues to be a successful jockey, dealing with the ups and downs of a very fickle industry. Definitely worth reading.

This is a great book about a great jockey that in my opinion should be in the National Thoroughbred Horse Racing Museum

and Hall of Fame. In fact to show you how great of a guy Garrett is I have a couple pictures that he signed that were sent to me. It'll be interesting to

see if Garrett gets a mount in this year's Belmont Stakes.

Real.

It feels wrong to love a book that chronicles someone struggling so badly with addiction. It feels wrong that a jockey who is so talented should be an addict. But this is life, and this is real. Not only am I a huge fan of Garrett, I am a person who has an addict in her life. I was so desperate in hearing about the struggles from the addict's side - and this book came out when I needed it most. I thank Garrett for telling his story. And I wish him the strength to get through the day, clean.

In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate.

Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

But such breakthroughs aren't unusual for Ben Carson. He's been beating the odds since he was a child.

Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. A role model who uses a winning strategy. Should be required reading for all black youths.

This is a magnificent book. It can be read as an inspirational story, or it can be read as an installment on the Habits of Highly Effective people.

What are the 5 things that stand out the most in my mind? (I'll limit the observations to 5, because there is just so much good to take away from this book.)

1, The subject of the biography is a profoundly religious man. It appears to me that many people who are successful have some type of religious foundation (Sikh/ Hindu/ Christian) and use it in the appropriate place for their life.

2. Carson seems to see people as people. (For instance, both the words "White" and "Black" were capitalized when they referred to a person's ethnicity.)

3. There is no hint of bitterness or of Victomology. Carson was trained to do something and he *earned* his respect by demonstrating skills and bringing something to the table. (He did not spend any time trying to guilt whites into seeing him as an equal.) At the same time, he does not shy away from seeing himself as a black person. (His wife is black and so are his children.)

4. There are many strategies that were used on him in his upbringing that would be useful to other parents. i. No more than 3 TV shows per week. (As in, three hours or TV or less.) Two books per week.

5. Carson has said something that has run through my mind 1,000 times: Not all children can be a sports star or singer (the odds are less than 1 in 10,000).

Of the prose: It's very easy to read and interesting (thanks to Cecil Murphey) and the pages just breeze by.

Verdict: Worth the time. Worth the money. Highly recommended.

One Amazing Family

I was surprised to read the accounts of Dr. Ben Carson. His mother had a strong stamina in raising her two boys with such a positive attitude. She is my all time mentor. With hard work, and complete trust in God we all can accomplish what God has planned for us in our lives. She is a true example of an incredible faith. Dr. Carson is a one on a kind, as he was so honest is sharing his story, He is the unspoken hero that took many years of hard work to develop his talents, yet our God gave him and his wife a marriage union that held them though all circumstances., One thing I will take with me from this book is the power that God gives us with total faith in Him. My thanks Dr. Carson for a truly wonderful book that was well worth reading.

A fabulous read. Dr. Ben Carson is gifted in so many ways over and above his knowledge of medicine. His shared insights are thought provoking and character building.
A mother totally involved in encouraging her children and the discipline to see it though gave her children the ability to believe in themselves. A young person finding his way through a childhood of poverty learning what truly are important values . It would be good for every student and parents of students to read this book. Parents would learn you do not need to be your child's friend to be loved and respected by your children and children would learn how to value them self and to find what values are truly important and not what society feeds our children .

Roland and his tiny team will have to dig deeper than they ever thought possible as they try to find solutions on the fly for overcoming these harrowing obstacles.

Weapons are authorized! Episode 3 adds another method for the contestants to dish out even more brutal punishments than before: futuristic weapons. Roland unleashes his carbon alloy weapon, using his mind to uniquely shape it for every situation.

There’s more than just the race! Skylar’s latest plugin puts Roland undercover in Pinnacle’s most secure facility. One false move on this clandestine operation will most certainly put Roland in a small cell with Pinnacle only too happy to throw away the key.

Worth reading, but getting a little repetitive

It's still exciting, as the first two but I found that it was beginning to get a little repetitive as he tried to complete a given obstacle. He would "turn on" the same abilities, and the descriptions would be the same each time. I was hoping for a bit more advancements, perhaps some unseen for both the user and the programmer, but non of that happened. However, still worth reading.

Nanotechnology - I'm hooked!

Okay, I'm hooked. I want to see what happens to Roland, Skylar, and the rest of the contestants. The first three books are exciting and take organic technology to the next step in human development. I can't say anything else without giving away the entire ending. Good series so far.
